Prime Video has acquired the historical gladiator drama series Those About to Die, from director Roland Emmerich (Moonfall, Independence Day, Godzilla), for select territories in Europe.

Inspired by the nonfiction book of the same name by Daniel P. Mannix, which also inspired Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, the ten-episode series explores the complex and corrupt world of chariot racing and gladiatorial fights in Ancient Rome. It will debut in 2024 on Prime Video in 16 European territories.

These are the U.K., Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Turkey, Andorra, Monaco, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Those About to Die stars Sir Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, King Lear), Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones), Tom Hughes (The English, Victoria), Sara Martins (Tell No One, Death in Paradise) and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of Thrones), as well as Jojo Macari (Sex Education), Gabriella Pession (Crossing Lines), Dimitri Leonidas (Rosewater, Renegades), Moe Hashim (Ted Lasso), Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel), Eneko Sagardoy (Elite), Pepe Barroso (Gran Turismo), Gonçalo Almeida (Amor, Amor), Kyshan Wilson (Under the Amalfi Sun) and Alicia Edogamhe (Summertime).

The series from AGC Studios was commissioned by High End Productions, a joint venture created by Herbert G. Kloiber and Constantin Film, together with the Peacock. It is being produced by Centropolis, Hollywood Gang and Street Entertainment. It is written by head writer Robert Rodat (The Patriot, Saving Private Ryan).
