Picnic at Hanging Rock Coming to BBC

BBC has landed the U.K. rights for Picnic at Hanging Rock, a reimagining of the classic Joan Lindsay novel, from FremantleMedia International.

Picnic at Hanging Rock will make its world premiere on Foxtel in Australia in 2018. It is a FremantleMedia Australia production made with production investment from Screen Australia. Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Parts 1 and 2, In Darkness) stars in the series.

Amazon in the U.S. and Canal+ in France are already on board.

Jamie Lynn, the executive VP, head of sales and distribution for EMEA at FremantleMedia International, said: “With its globally renowned reputation for quality and the opportunity for this groundbreaking series to reach a deservedly wide U.K. audience, we are very excited to partner with the BBC for Picnic at Hanging Rock. This reimagining of the classic Joan Lindsay novel is modern, mysterious, completely gripping and visually spectacular. We’re confident it will have a real impact with viewers and is sure to be one of 2018’s most-talked-about shows.”

Sue Deeks, BBC’s head of program acquisition, added: “It is with great pleasure that we confirm the BBC as the U.K. home for this new, fresh take on Picnic at Hanging Rock. The combination of creative team and cast—led by one of Britain’s most exciting actors Natalie Dormer—will make for a must-see series for both fans of the classic novel and those coming to this wonderful story for the first time.”
