MHz Choice Acquires North American Rights to Cousins

The South African crime series Cousins has been exclusively acquired in North America by MHz Choice.

The limited series, based on a true story, follows two 12-year-old cousins, Issie Fourie and Petro Nel, who were kidnapped and murdered in 1966 in the quiet town of Odendaalsrus, and the victims’ families’ subsequent two-decade quest for justice.

The series was written by Saartjie Botha and Philip Rademeyer and directed by Jaco Bouwer. The series is produced by Wolflight Films, with Roelof Storm serving as executive producer.

Cousins is a haunting and evocative period crime drama and a powerful story of loss and justice that transcends geography,” said Lance Schwulst, executive VP of content strategy at MHz Choice. “We’re incredibly proud to introduce this moving, cinematic series to U.S. audiences.”

Cousins is one of the most powerful and meticulously crafted dramas to come out of South Africa in recent years,” said Nomsa Philiso, director of content and general entertainment of English and Portuguese content at MultiChoice. “We are incredibly proud to see this story—rooted in our history yet resonating far beyond our borders—find a new home with audiences in the U.S. and Canada. MHz Cousins has a strong track record of championing exceptional international storytelling, and we’re thrilled that Cousins will join their lineup. As a Canal+ company, we remain committed to bringing distinctive African stories to global viewers, and this partnership marks another meaningful step in that journey.”
