Mediapro has signed an agreement with VICE Studios for the co-development and co-production of original scripted series in Latin America.

The partnership includes Border Republic, which takes place on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. The series will focus on the cities of Matamoros and Brownsville, which, although located in different countries, share a similar culture. Production kicks off next year throughout the natural landscapes on the border.

Daniel Burman, content director of Mediapro in the U.S., said: “VICE has renewed the documentary language to such an extent that merely a frame is necessary to recognize their signature. Their narrative codes are unmistakable, and their way of telling stories has left behind the purely audiovisual to become a unique phenomenon of the culture of our days. To have the opportunity to be partners in the evolution of this language and this aesthetic towards the world of fiction is a challenge as well as an opportunity that fills us with pride.”

Andrés Reymondes, the CEO for VICE LatAm & U.S. Hispanic, noted: “This is the first of many scripted projects that we’ll be developing from VICE Studios LatAm in the coming years, and starting with Daniel and our friends at Mediapro is a privilege as well as a guarantee of commitment and the utmost quality.”

Laura Fernández Espeso, director of international content at Mediapro, added: “We are very pleased to have VICE as a partner. We are confident that its enormous trajectory, along with Mediapro’s experience in scripted content, will provide unthinkable stories to our viewers.”
