HBO has given the go-ahead for a third season of the anthology True Detective.

Nic Pizzolatto, who created the series, is the sole writer on the season, with the exception of episode four, which he co-wrote with David Milch. Pizzolatto will also serve as showrunner and direct alongside Jeremy Saulnier. Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) will star in the new installment as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. The third season will be set in the heart of the Ozarks and feature a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Executive producing alongside Pizzolatto and Saulnier are Scott Stephens, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Steve Golin, Bard Dorros and Richard Brown.

Pizzolatto commented: “I’m tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy. I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we’re all very excited to tell this story.”

HBO’s programming president, Casey Bloys, added: “Nic has written truly remarkable scripts. With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of True Detective.”
