Corus Entertainment’s Global has given the green light to a new drama and granted early renewals for a pair of titles in its suite of originals.

The Global Original legal drama series Family Law from SEVEN24 Films and Lark Productions begins production in Vancouver this spring. Global has also ordered renewals of its upcoming 2020 dramas Nurses, from eOne and ICF, and Shaftesbury’s Departure in advance of their broadcast premieres.

Family Law follows lawyer and recovering alcoholic Abigail Bianchi, who is struggling to put her career and family back together after hitting rock bottom. Forced to work at her estranged father’s firm as a condition of her probation, Abby forges new relationships with the half-brother and half-sister she’s never met as their dysfunctional family law firm helps other families with their own dysfunctions. Susin Nielsen is the showrunner on the project.

Nurses is a coming-of-age series following five young nurses working on the frontlines of a busy downtown Toronto hospital. Produced with the participation of the Canada Media Fund and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, the series makes its world premiere on Monday, January 6. Departure, a six-part event series created by Vincent Shiao with director T.J. Scott and showrunner Malcolm MacRury, stars Archie Panjabi and Christopher Plummer in a drama about the mystery of a passenger plane that vanishes over the Atlantic Ocean.

Other Global Originals returning to the network in 2020 include season four of Private Eyes and season eight of Big Brother Canada.

Lisa Godfrey, VP of original content for Corus Entertainment, said: “Corus is a powerhouse in fostering domestic talent to create internationally appealing scripted content for audiences in Canada and around the world. Today’s announcement underscores our long-term commitment to producing scripted Canadian content with creators who reflect diversity both on camera and off, and delivering that content to audiences on our largest platform—Global.”
