The German original Almost Fly is slated to debut on Warner TV Serie on May 2, followed by a global premiere on HBO Max.

The six-part series traces the beginnings of German-language hip-hop in the ’90s by centering on three 17-year-old nerds in West Germany who discover the genre when Black GIs from a nearby U.S. base drive past with music booming from their speakers.

Produced by Warner TV Serie with W&B Television, Almost Fly is written and directed by creator Florian Gaag. The hip-hop tracks composed specially for the series were written by Dexter, Maniac, JJ Whitefield, Roger Rekless, Fatoni, Kelvyn Colt and Peter Manns. Executive producers are Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann and Maximilian Vetter, as well as Warner TV Serie’s Hannes Heyelmann and Anke Greifeneder.

Samuel Benito, Andrew Porfitz and Simon Fabian star in the lead roles.

The series will debut on Warner TV Serie in Germany on May 2 and will become available to stream on HBO Max in 61 territories across the U.S., Latin America and Europe.

Almost Fly tells the fictionalized story of the beginnings of German hip-hop, but it’s also about the inspiration and innovation that can arise as cultures clash,” said Anke Greifeneder, VP of original production at WarnerMedia. “Thanks to our great cast, the rousing soundtrack and the fantastic work of everyone involved, Almost Fly is a series that is moving, uplifting and nostalgic.”
