Dalgliesh’s Elaine Pyke

New Pictures’ Elaine Pyke, executive producer on Dalgliesh, talks to TV Drama about the process of taking these stories from book to screen.

P.D. James’ international best-selling Adam Dalgliesh mysteries have been adapted for the screen, with Bertie Carvel starring as the beloved inspector. The Acorn TV original Dalgliesh, which launched yesterday, is an exclusive for the AMC Networks streaming service in North America, New Zealand and Australia. It makes its U.K. premiere later this week on Channel 5. All3Media International is handling sales for the rest of the world.

Set in mid-1970s England, the crime series is told from the perspective of the uniquely enigmatic detective, played with much charm and flair by Carvel (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Agatha Christie’s The Pale Horse, Doctor Foster). Each murder mystery—told as three two-parters—offers its own unique setting and cast.
