Buendía Estudios, Atresmedia & Netflix Team for Sira

Buendía Estudios has entered a partnership with Atresmedia and Netflix to produce and distribute Sira, a continuation of the 2013 series The Time in Between.

Based on the novels by María Dueñas and with Adriana Ugarte reprising her role as Sira Quiroga, the new series will continue the journey of the titular woman, now independent and cosmopolitan, as she faces new challenges in a postwar world in Jerusalem, London, Madrid and Tangier.

Sira, the book the new series is based on, was published in 2021. It has reached 800,000 copies sold in Spain and Latin America. International translations are available in English, French, Italian, Dutch and Arabic, among others. The novel is published by Editorial Planeta, with Scenic Rights handling the representation of its audiovisual adaptation rights.

Sonia Martínez (The Time in Between, Money Heist, Veneno) and Paloma Molina (Elite, When Nobody Is Watching, The Secret of Marrowbone) are attached as executive producers of the adaptation and will work in close collaboration with Dueñas, who serves as creative executive producer.

Sira is in the final stages of development and is expected to start production in late 2025. It will eventually premiere on Atresmedia in Spain and later become available on Netflix in Spain and across several international territories.

Sira is a highly significant project for Buendía Estudios,” said Ignacio Corrales, CEO of Buendía Estudios. “It expands its scope and consolidates new business models that integrate intellectual properties, television networks, platforms and top-tier talent from both national and international markets. This is a very challenging model to achieve, the result of a determined and intense effort over several years.”

Laura Abril, executive VP of scripted and global business development, added, “Taking on a project like Sira is a challenge that matches its ambition: a maximum level of creative and production demand. That’s why having a great team and the support of partners like Atresmedia and Netflix is key. This financing and collaboration model is proving to be the most effective way to bring large-scale, internationally-reaching stories to life. This alliance gives us the opportunity to take Sira far and bring it to a broad and diverse audience.”
