Gaumont UK has optioned Dressed For War: The Story of Audrey Withers, Vogue Editor Extraordinaire from the Blitz to the Swinging Sixties.

Based on the biography by best-selling writer, researcher and historian Julie Summers published by Simon & Schuster UK and supported by Vogue, Dressed For War is the untold story of Vogue‘s Editor-in-Chief Audrey Withers, a dynamic young woman determined to improve the lives of those around her, no matter the circumstances. Set in 1940s London, the story is being eyed for a drama-series adaptation that will be produced by Gaumont UK and executive produced by Alison Jackson.

Gaumont UK CEO and Executive Producer Alison Jackson said: “It’s a privilege to bring Audrey’s work and world to life—once described as the ‘most powerful woman in London,’ her influence on our world now is nothing short of extraordinary. She remains an inspirational woman, both in her public and private lives. Audrey fought against a patriarchal society designed to destroy her. She not only survived but thrived and therefore it couldn’t be more pertinent. It is hugely exciting that Julie has trusted us with this incredible biography, and we can’t wait to bring the story to life.”

Jackson added: “Across the globe, Gaumont is currently producing sixteen shows for various platforms, and we are absolutely honored to add this incredible project from the U.K. office to our slate; a brilliantly British story for a home and international audience.”

Vogue’s Harriet Wilson, director of editorial administration and rights at the Condé Nast publications, said: “Audrey Wither’s incredible story is an integral piece of British Vogue‘s history and heritage and we are thrilled to see Dressed For War by Julie Summers being made into a television series. Viewers will witness the incredible bravery of women all across Britain during the war and the power of Vogue in entertaining, inspiring, and bringing together the collective spirit of these women during the most challenging of days.”

Dressed For War Author Julie Summers commented: “I could not be more delighted that Dressed For War has landed in such safe and creative hands. The strong female team at Gaumont match Audrey Withers’ team at Vogue during the war and I am convinced they will produce a powerful drama for our times.”
