Altitude Television Adapting Crime Novel Penance

Altitude Television is developing an adaptation of Eliza Clark’s crime novel Penance.

The novel, Clark’s second, tells the story of a murder among teenagers on the eve of the historic Brexit vote. Screenwriter and author Juno Dawson is adapting the book for TV.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be working on Penance for TV with Juno,” said Gabby Kardar, development executive at Altitude Television. “Eliza’s novel is a stunning, zeitgeisty tour de force and there’s nothing quite like it on the screen. Juno’s vision for the adaptation is bold and brilliant, and we’re delighted to be collaborating with her and Eliza to realize it.”

Clark added, “I’m so excited for Penance to go into development with Juno at the helm. I couldn’t ask for a better team in Altitude and Juno and can’t wait to see what comes from this!”

“The first thing I did after finishing Penance was slide into Eliza’s DMs to ask if she planned on adapting the novel herself,” Dawson said. “Luckily for me, she was open to a collaboration. Penance is a challenging novel and a challenging adaptation, but that’s what makes the project so irresistible to me. How to capture the mystery, the sly satire, the character studies and tell this story in a form that no one has ever seen before? I can’t wait to get started with Eliza and the team at Altitude.”
