Telemundo, Televisa Settle Four-Year Lawsuit

MIAMI, January 24: Telemundo Communications Group has agreed
to settle a federal lawsuit brought by Grupo Televisa four years ago stemming
from a dispute over the actor Mauricio Islas.

This suit alleged that Telemundo “tortuously interfered”
with Televisa’s contract with Islas, a well-known telenovela star whose credits
include Televisa’s Primer amor… a mil por hora and Telemundo’s Pecados Ajenos. The federal courts ruled that Televisa was entitled to pursue its
claims under Florida law, and that the contract between the Mexican media giant
and Islas was valid and enforceable. The U.S. Hispanic broadcaster says it
“will abide by these rulings and pledges to respect Televisa’s rights in its
contracts with actors and other artists.”

Marcos Santana, the president of Telemundo Internacional,
said: “Telemundo is glad that Televisa accepted the settlement offered by
Telemundo and that this four-year controversy with Grupo Televisa is over so
Telemundo can focus on future projects with Grupo Televisa.”
