Report: Young Viewers Favor Web over DVR

TORONTO: New research indicates that a growing number of Americans 18 to 34 are choosing to watch TV shows online rather than using a digital video recorder.

According to a survey from Solutions Research Group, 70 percent of the 18-to-34 age group have watched TV online, while only 36 percent of the demographic hace watched on a DVR or TiVo. Of the 1,200 Americans aged 12 and up who responded, 50 percent reported watching a show online, double the percentage found in a similar survey in 2006.

Among the top shows for online viewing were Dancing With The StarsDesperate HousewivesGrey’s AnatomyHeroesThe Office and House. Other than YouTube, the "top-of-mind" destinations for video, TV shows and movies were ABC, Yahoo, NBC, Hulu, MySpace and CBS, each receiving more than 5 percent in mentions from survey respondents.
