Report: BBC to Shed 2,000-Plus Jobs

LONDON, October 10:
According to the Financial Times,
the BBC is planning to cut more than 12 percent of its workforce, accounting
for 2,000-plus employees, with the factual division expected to take the
biggest hit.

The report indicates that
Mark Thompson, the pubcaster’s director-general, will meet with the BBC Trust
next week to discuss the cutbacks, which are an attempt to make up for £2
billion shortfall in his budget following the new license fee deal announced
earlier this year.

This is the latest setback
for the British institution, which came under pressure following the call-in
scandals and, more recently, the botched trailer for a documentary about the
Queen that resulted in the resignation of BBC One chief Peter Fincham.
