TORONTO: Production has begun on Global Television’s new medical drama The Hot Zone, which was recently picked up by ABC, and will take place in Toronto through July 2011.

The 13×1-hour fictional medical procedural is set at the only military hospital in Southern Afghanistan that provides advanced surgical care. The show follows the lives of the hospital’s doctors and nurses from Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and other allied countries. Among the series’ stars are Elias Koteas of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Michelle Borth of Hawaii Five-0 and Luke Mably of The Gates.

Production on The Hot Zone comes from Canada’s Sienna Films and the U.K.’s Artists Studio; Academy Award-nominee Daniel Petrie Jr. of Beverly Hills Cop is serving as executive producer and showrunner.

Barbara Williams, the senior VP of content for Shaw Media, which owns Global Television, said: "There’s no mistaking the relevance of this gripping new series. With such a spectacular international cast on board and production now underway, we’re one step closer to bringing audiences this candid look at medical heroes on the frontlines of war."
