Nominees Announced for International Emmy Awards & Kids Emmys

CANNES: The nominations for the 40th International Emmy Awards have been announced, with 38 nominees in 9 categories, while 24 nominees were selected in 6 categories for the first annual International Emmy Kids Awards, which TV Kids is a partner in. 

This year’s International Emmy nominees span 15 countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain and the U.K. The winners will be announced at a special gala in New York City on November 19.

In the category for arts programming, the nominees are Blue Man from Japan’s Wowow; Queen: Days of Our Lives from the U.K.’s Eagle Rock Entertainment/Queen Productions/Globe Films; and Songs of War from Germany’s ZDF/ARTE/A & O Büro. 

The nominees for best performance by an actor are Arthur Acuña in The Kitchen Musical (Singapore), Darío Grandinetti in Televisión por la Inclusión (Argentina), Jason Isaacs in Case Histories (U.K.), Stein Winge in Norwegian Cozy (Norway) and Zhu Yawen in Flying Eagle (China). In the actress category, the nominees are Sidse Babett Knudsen in Government (Denmark), Cristina Banegas in Televisión por la Inclusión (Argentina), Rina Sa in Zhong Guo Di (China) and Joanna Vanderham in The Runaway (U.K.).

Comedy programs up for the award are Absolutely Fabulous (U.K.), The Invisible Woman (Brazil), Spy (U.K.) and What if? (Belgium). The documentary nominees are Across Land, Across Sea (South Korea), Hitler’s Escape (Argentina), Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die (U.K.) and Race to the South Pole (Germany). Drama series in contention for the award are Braquo (France), ICAC Investigators 2011 (China), The Kitchen Musical (Singapore), The Slap (Australia) and The Social Leader (Argentina). There are four contenders in the non-scripted entertainment category, and they are The Amazing Race Australia (Australia), The Challenger Muaythai (Singapore), The Anthill (Spain) and Extreme Planet (Brazil). 

“At the first International Emmys in 1972, there were only two categories: fiction and non-fiction. Today, we have 20 categories presented over 4 different awards ceremonies,” said Bruce L. Paisner, the president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “We congratulate the 2012 Nominees for their outstanding achievements as their programs and performances enter into television history and look forward to celebrating them at our Festival and 40th anniversary Gala, this November in New York.”

The first-ever International Emmy Kids Awards will be presented on February 8, 2013 in New York City. The nominees for the inaugural event span 13 countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, the Netherlands and the U.K.

In the preschool category, the nominees are Cloudbread (South Korea), El Jardin de Clarilu (Argentina), The Reading Band (Norway) and Octonauts (U.K.). For kids animation, The Amazing World of Gumball (U.K.) is up for the win alongside Ask Lara (Spain), Digimon Xros Wars: The Young Hunters Who Leapt Through Time (Japan) and The Jungle Bunch (France). The kids’ factual nominees are Christmas Special: The Dreaming Orchestra’s 180 Days (South Korea), Coming Out (the Netherlands), Truth Lies (Argentina) and My Autism and Me (U.K.). Winners will also be named in the category of non-scripted kids’ entertainment, selected from Art Attack (Brazil), Energy Survival (Norway), In Real Life (Canada) and Wittaya Subprayuth (Thailand). Up for best series are Julie and the Phantoms (Brazil), Junior High School Diaries (Japan), SLiDE (Australia) and Leave Me Alone (Norway). The nominees for the TV movie/mini-series category are Fairy Tales on TV (South Korea), Lost Christmas (U.K.), The Star Talers (Germany) and The Strongest Man in Holland (the Netherlands). 

“One of the great success stories of international television in the last few years has been the explosion of high quality children’s programming around the globe,” said Paisner. “In recognition of this, the International Academy is pleased to have created these new awards and we look forward to the first International Emmy Kids Awards ceremony, in February 2013.”
