SANTA MONICA: While more than 50 percent of living rooms in the U.S. have Internet-connected devices, they remain underutilized for streaming TV and movie entertainment, finds a new report from research firm Interpret.

In its recent report, The State of Internet-Connected Living Rooms, Interpret reveals that Internet-connected devices have made their way into more than half of U.S. consumers’ living rooms. According to Interpret’s New Media Measure syndicated study, only 22 percent of those who own a game console connected to the Internet have used it to stream a movie or TV show. Among owners of set-top boxes, including Apple TV or Roku, only 18 percent have used it for movie or TV streaming.

Streaming numbers for audio were also weak, according to Interpret’s Streaming Music: Will It Replace the CD and MP3? report. Consumers only listen to streaming music options 16 percent of the time when listening to music, it found. The findings suggest that streaming and Cloud services need to demonstrate more value to convert listeners to paid subscribers or to benefit from advertising.
