SAN FRANCISCO: Search giant Google has formally unveiled its much anticipated Google TV platform, bringing the web to the TV-viewing experience, with DISH Network and Sony, among other partners on board.

Based on the Android platform, Google TV will allow users to access Internet applications and content—including Flash—from the TV set, with a web-browsing-like experience. It is being coupled with the Intel Atom processor CE4100 consumer-electronics chip to deliver home-theater quality A/V performance. Sony and Logitech will be delivering products based on the new Intel Atom processor and running Google TV later this year. Google TV is set to run on any platform, but has firmed up a partnership with satellite platform DISH Network, which will integrate the software into its HD DVRs. Google TV’s functionality will enable users to search network and pay-TV channel listings. DVR lists and the Internet, and offer up a personalizable home screen.

"Google TV marks the next evolution in television, and we are excited to be the first to partner with Google to bring this experience to our customers," said Charlie Ergen, chairman, president and CEO of DISH Network. "Only DISH Network Google TV customers will be able to enjoy a unified search across TV, DVR and web; easily find related content; and manage their entire TV viewing experience. Additionally, the advanced integration will allow developers to create new and exciting applications to enrich the TV viewing experience.”

Google TV devices will be sold at Best Buy locations nationwide later this year.
