Google in Talks to Buy YouTube

MOUNTAIN VIEW/SAN MATEO, October 9: Google is in discussions
with YouTube to purchase the highly successful video-sharing website for as
much as $1.6 billion, according to multiple reports.

YouTube, which distributes over 100 million video clips per
day, most of them user-generated, has become a major destination among young
people and in the past year has suddenly emerged as a source of entertainment
competing with other forms of video—including television.

Google, which has become the Internet’s most powerful
advertising vehicle, has had less success with its video service. Joining
forces with YouTube would allow it to extend ads beyond search results and link
them to YouTube’s video content.
