Globo Expands Digital Signal

SÃO PAULO, July 7: TV Globo has launched digital TV broadcasts in three states—São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro—as it gears up for the analogue switch-off in 2016.

The digital signal offers up improved video and sound quality, can deliver HD content and be viewed on mobile devices and will soon deliver interactive features. TV Globo currently carries some 13 hours per week of high-definition content, including movies, football, the prime-time telenovela A Favorita, comedy series such as Big Family, news segments and special events such as Carnival and the Olympic Games.

Digital broadcasting began in the city of São Pauloin December 2007 and, by 2016, will be extended to all of Brazil. TV Globo expects to begin digital broadcasts on 12 affiliates later this year, to be extended to viewers in all of Brazil’s major cities by 2009.
