Gemini Winners Announced for Doc, News, Sports Categories

TORONTO, October 17: At a ceremony yesterday at the Liberty
Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, the winners were announced in the
documentary, news and sports categories for the Academy of Canadian Cinema and
Television’s Gemini Awards, with CBC Television’s China Rises winning the best documentary award.

For best news information series, the winner was CBC’s the
fifth estate
. Best history documentary
program went to CBC’s Breaking Point,
and the CBC Newsworld offering Braindamadj'd…Take II took best biography documentary program. The
National Film Board of Canada’s Being Caribou was named best science, technology, nature,
environment or adventure documentary. Prisoners of Age from The Eyes Project Development Corp won the best
performing arts program/series or arts documentary category.

Best sports program went to Hockey Brawl: Battle on Thin
Ice
, and best newscast was CBC
News: The National
.

The Gemini Lifestyle, Children's and Youth Awards will be
announced this evening, followed by the Gemini Drama, Variety and Comedy Awards
tomorrow.
