Four Cities in the Running for 2016 Olympics

ATHENS, June 4: Chicago,
Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid are on the shortlist of cities bidding to host
the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) announced today.

The candidate cities were
accepted unanimously from seven applicant cities, which also included Prague,
Baku in Azerbaijan and Doha. The selection was made by the IOC’s executive
board in Athens and took into consideration issues such as venues, transport,
accommodation and security. The selected cities have until February 12 to
submit detailed proposals to the IOC Evaluation Commission. The final selection
will be made by the full IOC membership on October 2, 2009.
