Former Scripps Chairman Passes Away

CINCINNATI, February 5: Charles E. Scripps, who served as
chairman of The E. W. Scripps Company from 1953 until 1994, has died of natural
causes at the age of 87.

Scripps was the grandson of Edward W. Scripps, who founded
the company in 1878. During his four decades as chairman of The E. W. Scripps
Company, Scripps oversaw the company’s expansion beyond its print business into
television with local TV stations and the launch of the Scripps Networks
bouquet of cable channels.

"This company, our community and the entire media
industry are affected by the loss of Charles Scripps," said Kenneth W.
Lowe, the president and CEO of The E. W. Scripps Company. "Charles set the
tone for this company's fearless journalism, unquestioned integrity and
restless innovation. Those are legacies that continue to influence our approach
to operating the business that carries his family's name."
