LONDON: Current TV has commissioned a new documentary that looks at the growing trend of forced marriages in the U.K.: The Forced Marriage Unit.

The Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) is an actual organization that us jointly run by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Home Office. The doc looks to investigate some of the "pushers" and victims involved in forced marriages. The film follows the team at their busiest time of the year, the school summer holiday.

The documentary will air in February 2011.

Current TV’s director of content, Lina Prestwood, said, “Our privileged, on-the-ground access to the FMU allows us to see first-hand what happens to young British women as they go through the terrifying experience of escaping a forced marriage, rather than unpicking the gruesome details of forced marriage crimes and their perpetrators after the event. The vast majority of people from communities where forced marriage occurs do not condone it but when it does happen the consequences can be tragic and this film tackles a tremendously important human rights issue in the U.K. The Forced Marriage Unit is the perfect addition to our Monday night documentary strand, which allows us to examine topical and controversial issues in a more in-depth manner.”
