NEW YORK: The Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica has been dropped by Syfy, with the final five episodes of the season to be re-scheduled for a yet-to-be-announced date.

Syfy has not yet unveiled what will take the place of Caprica in its lineup. The final five episodes are likely to air in the first quarter of 2011. After that, the show ends its run. The channel recently gave the greenlight for a new installment in the Battlestar franchise: Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.

"We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series," said Mark Stern, the executive VP of original programming at Syfy and co-head of content for Universal Cable Productions. "Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season."
