Cannes Gears Up for Simpsons Tribute

CANNES: MIPCOM and Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution are celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons here in Cannes this week with a slate of events, including the declaration of "Simpsons Day" on October 7.

On Wednesday, October 7, the Mayor of Cannes will officially proclaim it “Simpsons Day” in Cannes, presenting creator and executive producer Matt Groening with a yellow key to the city in a morning ceremony in front of Riviera Hall. That evening, Groening will receive the first-ever MIPCOM Creative Icon Award during a gala yellow-carpet dinner. Groening and Al Jean, executive producer, will discuss the show’s longevity on Tuesday, October 6, in a session moderated by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), who is directing an upcoming special about The Simpsons. Also on Tuesday, there will be a press conference with Groening and Jean, as well as the actors that voice Homer and Marge.

“The irreverent humor of The Simpsons’ has traveled around the world," said Laurine Garaude, the acting director of Reed MIDEM’s television division. "It is a remarkable example of a show that for two decades has combined creative richness with huge commercial success without compromise. We are proud to be a part of the celebration of this truly global television phenomenon."

Mark Kaner, the president of Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, added: “We are excited to have Matt and Al at MIPCOM, and having the show honored by Reed MIDEM as part of its 20th anniversary celebration is worthy recognition from an international marketplace where creativity and great fun are held in high esteem."

Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution will also be holding MIPCOM Screenings this week in the Palais Auditorium H, where it will screen new episodes of Glee, White Collar and Modern Family.
