BET’s Jackson Tribute Delivers Ratings High

NEW YORK: The BET Awards show on Sunday, which was dedicated to Michael Jackson, broke ratings records for the network and, with 10.7 million total viewers, has become cable’s highest-rated telecast so far this year.

The three and a half hour broadcast featured a host of tributes to Jackson, who passed away on Thursday, as well as an appearance by Janet Jackson. "The number of viewers who tuned in to see the BET Awards ’09 is a testament to Michael Jackson’s far-reaching and long-lasting influence and legacy," said Debra L. Lee, the chairman and CEO of BET Networks. "We’re thankful to everyone who played a role in the show, both on stage and behind the camera, and it meant so much to all of us to be there for our audience at this emotional time. Above all, we extend our love and prayers to the Jackson family and are honored that Joe and Janet Jackson were in attendance."

The Viacom-owned cable network has had a string of successes as of late. Its second quarter reflected a 34-percent ratings increase on last year.
