DOC Relaunches as Fully Commercial Service

NASHVILLE/ENGLEWOOD: The Documentary Channel (DOC) can now offer up traditional 30-second spots after relaunching as a fully commercial service, almost four years after premiering as a public-interest network.

DOC, launched in 2006 by filmmaker Tom Neff—who recently transitioned from the CEO role to founder and chief creative officer—has also entered into a new multi-year carriage agreement with DISH Network. The documentary service reaches more than 21 million homes via DISH and broadcast affiliation deals with stations in several markets.

President and CEO James Ackerman told NashvillePost.com that the move to a full commercial service allows the channel to target a wider range of sponsorship and advertising opportunities. “The revenue potential for the company is significantly increased,” Ackerman is quoted as saying.
