BBC One to Air Day of the Triffids Remake

LONDON, December 1: The BBC
is set to resurrect John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic novel The Day of the Triffids as a two-part
90-minute drama, which will be produced by Power to air on BBC One in 2009.

Originally written in
1951, The Day
of the Triffids
will be adapted by Patrick Harbinson (ER, Law & Order). The executive producers are
Power's Justin Bodle, Prodigy Picture's Jay Firestone and Julie
Gardner, the head of drama at BBC Wales for the BBC. Produced by Stephen
Smallwood (Murphys
Law
) and directed by Nick Copus (EastEnders, The Summit), The Day of the Triffids is set in the
year 2011, when man has depleted the world's fossil fuel supply. In the hunt
for alternative sources they uncover the Triffid, a crop now cultivated for its
fuel that seems to have a life of its own.

Gardner commented: "The Day of the
Triffids
is a classic title. I'm excited that its powerful story is being
remade for television. We're hoping to attract a legion of fans as well as give
nightmares to a new generation of viewers."

Bodle added: "This is
an enormously exciting project for us. Armed with a fantastic contemporary and
highly topical script, based on Wyndham's cult classic, we look forward to
delivering a major drama event for a 21st century audience."
