Hispanic Doc Series Voces to Air on Public TV in September

LOS ANGELES, August 4: The
13-part series Voces, from
Latino Public Broadcasting, is set to air on public TV stations across the U.S.
in September as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Olmos, the series is composed of documentaries and musical specials that
spotlight the diversity of Latin-American culture. Episodes include The Bronze
Screen
, on actors such as Rita
Moreno, Anthony Quinn and Jimmy Smits; From Mambo to Hip Hop with Latin jazz legends Eddie Palmieri and Ray
Barretto; Pancho Gonzalez: Warrior of the Court on the tennis pro; and The Republic of Baseball, about the first Dominican baseball players to
play in the Major League. Other episodes will cover issues like immigration (The
Guestworker
), gangs (Nuestra
Familia
) and suburban ethnicity (Recalling
Orange County
).

Luca
Bentivoglio, the executive director of Latino Public Broadcasting, states, “We
see Voces as the first national
public television series to truly show the broad spectrum of Latino influence
in America, one that goes far beyond the one-note coverage of Latinos seen,
especially lately, in the media.”

The
series is distributed by American Public Television, and will run through
November 25. Latino Public Broadcasting is a non-profit organization funded by
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Its mission is to support the
“development, production, post-production, acquisition and distribution of
non-commercial educational and cultural television that is representative of
Latino people, or addresses issues of particular interest to Latino Americans.”
