ZDF Studios Outlines MIPCOM Offering

ZDF Studios is “bringing bold, emotionally resonant dramas with international appeal, fresh and imaginative junior programming that inspires and entertains and unscripted titles that push boundaries” to MIPCOM this year, according to Dr. Markus Schäfer, president and CEO.

The drama offering is led by Ku’damm 77, a continuation of the Ku’damm franchise taking place in the ’70s that “offers strong, female-led storytelling with emotional depth and universal themes,” Schäfer says. It will have its world premiere at MIPCOM on October 14 in the Grand Auditorium of the Palais.

The drama roster also includes The Puzzle Lady, following a crossword-loving amateur sleuth; Weiss & Morales, a cross-cultural crime series; and Top End Bub, a sequel to the movie Top End Wedding.

The kids’ catalog features The Lady Grace Mysteries, based on the children’s novels. Taking place in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, it follows Lady Grace Cavendish, a teenage girl who secretly works as a spy for the Queen.

“Set in a unique historical world, it blends mystery, humor and adventure in a way that’s both entertaining and educational,” Schäfer says. “With an empowering, clever heroine at its core, the series offers broad appeal across kids’ entertainment platforms, making it a valuable addition to any global content lineup.”

Also on the kids’ programming slate is Magic Moves Kids, a format and ready-made that sees ten kids take part in a two-week program combining intensive motor skills therapy with the art of magic; Hoodie, returning for a third season; and Klincus, featuring tales about nature, invention and friendship.

On the unscripted slate, “we’re showcasing a slate of standout documentaries—from visually stunning nature series to thought-provoking science and history titles—that are designed to resonate with diverse audiences across platforms,” says Ralf Rückauer, VP Unscripted.

The expansive unscripted offering features Pharaohs at War, telling the history of ancient Egypt and bringing the wars of the pharaohs to life. “Across four captivating episodes, we take viewers on an immersive journey of discovery, re-creating the battles that shaped one of the greatest civilizations in history,” Rückaeuer says. “Featuring expert testimony, breathtaking CGI and dynamic imagery, each episode unveils archaeological discoveries made at the very sites where history was made.”

The factual lineup also features the eight-part Into the Universe, which delves into astronomical enigmas, exploring the cycles that shape the sky—from the birth of spiral galaxies to the deaths of massive stars. “What makes Into the Universe stand out for global buyers is its combination of cinematic storytelling, accessible science and universal themes that resonate across cultures,” Schäfer says. “With high production value and a narrative that sparks curiosity, Into the Universe is ideal for channels and platforms seeking premium factual content that educates, inspires and engages audiences worldwide.”

Indonesia’s Volcanic Islands, meanwhile, brings a blend of natural wonder and environmental urgency and offers access to remote habitats and rare animal behavior. “With stunning cinematography and cinematic storytelling, it delivers a visually immersive experience,” Rückauer says. “Its powerful themes of biodiversity and conservation resonate worldwide.”

At MIPCOM, “our goal is to showcase the strength and diversity of our content across drama, junior and unscripted,” Schäfer notes, adding, “My focus is on deepening relationships with partners and exploring new business opportunities. ZDF Studios aims to elevate its affiliated companies on the international stage by showcasing distinctive, high-quality content across all genres and fostering strategic global partnerships. MIPCOM is a key moment to spark collaboration and reinforce our commitment to premium storytelling.”
