TORONTO: Breakthrough Entertainment and Northeast Films have started production on the original sketch comedy Picnicface, debuting on The Comedy Network in Canada.

The series is from the Halifax-based sketch troupe of the same name. The show combines animation and sketch comedy. It is shooting on location in Halifax, with principal photography on the 13 half-hour episode set to wrap in mid-July. Picnicface is executive produced by Garry Campbell (Kids in the Hall, Todd & the Book of Pure Evil, MadTV).

Picnicface is finally going to put their funny where their mouth is," said Campbell. "As we capture their comedy on camera, soon all of Canada will know what I’ve known for some time now: Given a little luck, these guys have a 50/50 chance of being the next big thing.”

Picnicface is an exciting and fun series project for Breakthrough, taking our company into a new category of entertainment—topical sketch comedy. The show’s ensemble is comprised of incredibly talented comics that have already garnered a loyal online following that we believe will expand exponentially,” added Ira Levy, a principal of Breakthrough Entertainment along with co-partner Peter Williamson.
