U.K. Channels Report: The Africa Channel

PREMIUM: Original co-productions are on the roster for The Africa Channel in the U.K., particularly for “high-end factual,” according to the network’s creative director, Basi Akpabio.

The channel, available on Sky, has a grid that is built around a prime-time block of eight hours of original programming each day, Akpabio says, with stripped series and themed evenings. It is focused on delivering programming that will “appeal to a broad audience but [has] a distinct African flavor—this could mean content that is made in Africa, is inspired by Africa, or is about Africa or Africans. Importantly, it should reflect the trends and production values of mainstream entertainment television.”

As it seeks out content, the channel is eager for “breakthrough shows with high production values, maybe involving talent as a driver. Content should be Africa related (e.g. cast, story, location). Series are particularly welcome although films and singles are of interest too.”

Genres of particular interest for acquisitions are drama, film, documentary, history, travel, lifestyle, sport, natural history and current affairs.

In terms of co-productions, Akpabio says the channel is looking out for second-window opportunities with another U.K. broadcaster or equal co-pro or minority co-pro with international and local broadcasters.
