NEW YORK: Coal, a new series from Thom Beers’ Original Productions that looks into the lives of West Virginia coal miners, will make its way to Spike TV in April 2011.

Spike has ordered up 10 hour-long episodes, which will explore the profession of coal mining through the eyes of Mike Crowder and Tom Roberts, co-owners of Cobalt Mine in West Virginia. The pair lead more than 40 machine operators, foremen, electricians and drivers into the dangerous working conditions. The series is in line with the other Original Productions cable shows that explore high-risk occupations, including Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers and Axe Men.

"Coal mining is an integral part of the American economy and the lifeblood of communities across the U.S. and the world," said Sharon Levy, the executive VP of original series and animation at Spike TV. "This series is going to shine a light on the brave men and women and their families who endure the rigors of this arduous profession."
