MAINZ: ZDF Enterprises (ZDFE) is releasing the documentary The Shakespeare Enigma, which tackles the mystery William Shakespeare’s identity, to complement the Roland Emmerich film Anonymous.

Produced by Atlantis Film for ZDF and ZDF Enterprises and directed by Eike Schmitz, The Shakespeare Enigma is a companion piece to Roland Emmerich’s Shakespeare film Anonymous, which will be released in the U.S. in October. Both films address the mystery of who is responsible for writing plays under the name of Shakespeare.

Christopher Marlowe, an author and a secret agent for Queen Elizabeth I is among the candidates scholars consider a possibility. History specialists in the documentary explore the idea that Marlowe faked his own death to avoid arrest and possible execution by Elizabeth I’s ministers so he could devote his life to literature under the name of Shakespeare.
