The Evandro Case: A Devilish Plot Hits the Global Market

Globo has launched the Globoplay original docuseries The Evandro Case: A Devilish Plot to the international market.

The series investigates the notorious disappearance and death of a 6-year-old boy, Evandro Ramos Caetano, in a small Brazilian seashore town in 1992. The Evandro Case: A Devilish Plot, adapted from a true-crime podcast, premiered in Brazil on the Globoplay platform earlier this year.

Seven people were arrested and confessed that they had used the boy in a macabre ritual. However, the case was far from being solved, as the guilt of those people was far from being properly proven. Through eight episodes, the docuseries shows the key character statements, file images and the case’s notorious scenes. The production arose from the investigations of the journalist Ivan Mizanzuk in the podcast Human Projects in Brazil.

Mizanzuk said: “Criminal cases have a mechanism to try and find out what happened exactly (who killed, what happened, where it happened, how was the investigation, what are the evidences, how the evidences are assessed, etc.), and this mystery seemed to be a fine narrative fuel. I have always heard of the ‘Guaratuba Witches’ haunting case. I lived part of the panic it caused—I was 8 years old at the time and I was afraid of being kidnapped as I grew up. Everything I researched about the story online made me feel confused: there were pieces here and there, but I could not find a place where everything was explained coherently, introducing deeply all sides and performing a deep and unbiased investigation. The choice of that case seemed natural to me, and somehow it enabled me to perform an exorcism of some personal demons from my childhood.”

General Director Aly Muritiba said: “The Evandro Case: A Devilish Plot is the first Brazilian show adapted from a podcast. We wanted a product intended not only to the people that know the story and the podcast but also a show that everyone could understand and follow.”
