Filming has begun for the upcoming Sky original true-crime documentary Car Park Murder (w.t.), delving into the 2006 murder of millionaire Charlotte Böhringer.

Böhringer was found beaten to death in her penthouse flat above Munich’s Isar Car Park in 2006, and her nephew Benedikt Toth was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder out of greed. The verdict proved to be controversial, as it was based exclusively on circumstantial evidence, and Toth, who was released from prison today, has maintained his innocence.

The film, produced by Bavaria Fiction, will incorporate the latest findings and developments in the case and feature exclusive interviews for those involved to provide a comprehensive picture. It broadcast on Sky and streaming service WOW in 2024.

Car Park Murder is being directed by Gunter Scholz (Ich war es nicht! Zwei Urteile und viele Zweifel) and executive produced by Emanuel Rotstein for Bavaria Fiction and Christian Asanger and Nico Gammella for Sky. NBCUniversal Global Distribution will handle global distribution.

“The so-called ‘Car Park Murder’ of Munich is one of the most spectacular criminal cases in Germany, which has kept the judiciary and the media on tenterhooks to this day with its numerous unanswered questions,” said Asanger, VP of entertainment at Sky Deutschland. “The convicted perpetrator Benedikt Toth continues to deny the crime. Our gripping, true-crime documentary sheds light on the case in an impressive and meticulous way and has exclusive access to the convict.”

Rotstein, head of documentaries at Bavaria Fiction, added, “The ‘Car Park Murder’ has moved the German public for more than 17 years. A horrific crime with many inconsistencies. However, the murder of Charlotte Böhringer is more than a high-profile case; it is a tragedy with many twists and turns and asks the central question of how far apart law and justice are. As an established Munich production company, we are particularly pleased to now be able to produce a fact-based and compelling documentary for the national and international market.”
