Following its rollout of Smithsonian Channel last month, Layer3 TV has become the first MVPD in the U.S. to carry the factual network’s full 4K on-demand library.

As the first U.S. network to adopt a regularly-refreshed 4K on-demand model, Smithsonian Channel’s offering includes ten hours of dedicated 4K content that is updated each quarter. The 4K on-demand library is now available to all Layer3 TV subscribers at no additional cost. Layer3 TV supports 4K on every set-top box and is available in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver and Washington, D.C.

“Layer3 TV and Smithsonian Channel are leading the United States in the 4K pay-TV market with this first-of-its-kind partnership,” said Layer3 TV’s chief content officer Lindsay Gardner. “Our subscribers can now enjoy Smithsonian Channel’s most acclaimed series on the linear channel, with the added feature of viewing many programs—including Mysteries of the Rainforest, Aerial America, Sacred Sites and David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies—in glittering 4K Ultra High Definition.”

“We’re proud to be the first U.S. network to offer this 4K on-demand model and thrilled Layer3 TV has the technology and forward-looking team to bring us to customers across America,” says Tom Hayden, the president of Smithsonian Channel. “The compelling storytelling Smithsonian Channel is known for makes this partnership all the more meaningful for Layer3 TV subscribers. With programming genres including air and space, pop culture, history, science, nature and wildlife at its finest, our 4K content is sure to enhance the viewing experience by delivering striking, life-like visuals. We are pleased Layer3 TV is making this substantial addition to its already robust Platinum package.”
