Video Interview: Killer Lies’ Ben Selkow & Lauren Collins

In 2022, The New Yorker’s Lauren Collins published an article delving into the life and career of Stéphane Bourgoin, who, from 1990 to 2020, made a name for himself as a serial killer expert, claiming his career choice was inspired by a girlfriend being brutally killed in the ’70s. He was able to secure jailhouse interviews with famous murderers, pen 75 books, appear on television to share his supposed expertise and even lecture police on the subject of criminology for three decades until an anonymous group of true-crime fans began to investigate him and Collins picked up on the story.

Now, National Geographic’s Killer Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man exposes Bourgoin’s fabricated credentials and major lies—including the made-up story about a girlfriend being murdered by a serial killer—on-screen, detailing the investigation led by the online vigilante group The 4th Eye Corporation and Collins.

Director Ben Selkow and Collins tell TV Real Weekly about breaking down the story across three episodes, delving even deeper into Bourgoin’s lies and interviewing Bourgoin himself.
