72 Films has been commissioned by BBC Two to produce a three-part social history series on the Murdoch empire.

A Tabloid Empire (working title) will cover the period from 1997 to 2012, examining how the popular press went from influencing public opinion to being mired in the scandals that led to the Leveson Enquiry. The series will use archives and exclusive interviews with those at the center of the story to deconstruct the Murdoch empire and the moments that defined it.

“With A Dangerous Dynasty: House of Assad, 72 Films made one of the most exceptional modern history series of recent years,” said Patrick Holland, controller at BBC Two. “This series promises to combine the same forensic eye for detail with the best documentary storytelling to explore the decade that changed our relationship with the press forever.”

Tom McDonald, the head of commissioning for natural history and specialist factual, added: “This new commission continues to signal our commitment to stories, forms and ideas that shine a light on the big issues in modern society through the prism of recent history. This series promises intricate storytelling, beautifully assembled archives and fascinating interviews from those who witnessed and lived through these events.”
