BBC One Airing Two Specials for VJ Day Anniversary

BBC One will broadcast two special programs to mark VJ Day on August 15, when World War II finally came to an end.

VJ Day 75: The Nation Remembers will air live from the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, where the remembrance commemoration is taking place. In the studio, Sophie Raworth will speak with guests, including veterans, about the significance of the anniversary. Dan Snow will talk to those participating in the commemoration, while Fergal Keane will provide commentary of the event. Charles, the Prince of Wales will lead a national two minutes of silence.

The commemorations will close with VJ Day 75: The Nation’s Tribute from Horse Guards Parade in London, where an evening event will tell the story of all those that served in the Far East. Narrated by Joanna Lumley, the event will chart the campaign that led to the end of World War II. Key moments of the conflicts will be reflected through readings and musical performances by Sheridan Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Paterson Joseph and Martin Shaw. Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge will pay tribute to the veterans and acknowledge the sacrifices made by so many.

Both specials are produced by the BBC Studios Events team and commissioned by Carla-Maria Lawson for the BBC.
