Animasia Studio and Bawah Tanah have entered a partnership with Komet Productions for the new IP Kisah Bawah Tanah.

The animated horror-comedy series, featuring reimagined Southeast Asian folklore, is slated for release in 2025. Currently in production, the first season will consist of 26 11-minute episodes.

Kisah Bawah Tanah follows best friends Sam and Zack as they navigate a world teeming with creatures that have long haunted the imaginations of Southeast Asia.

Komet Productions will also play a key role in expanding the IP’s potential through strategies for licensing, promotions, distribution and merchandising. Kisah Bawah Tanah is being planned as a multi-faceted franchise, encompassing video games, a spin-off micro-series, on-ground experiential attractions, direction for the soundtrack and music scoring as well as the development of a feature film.

Komet Productions’ Ahmad Izham Omar said, “We view Kisah Bawah Tanah as a pivotal step in maturing Malaysian animation beyond the children’s market. We’re blending horror, comedy, and our rich local folklore to create animation that entertains and resonates with audiences worldwide.”

Hendra Wardi, co-creator of Kisah Bawah Tanah, added, “Komet’s creative energy is a perfect match for the madcap humor of Kisah Bawah Tanah. With their support, our ambitions have grown, and we’re confident that this collaboration will propel the series and brand to new heights. Everyone has stories that spooked them as kids, and now it’s time to share the ones that have resonated through generations here in Southeast Asia.”

Edmund Chan, managing director of Animasia Studio, said, “Ahmad Izham is known for being highly selective with his projects, and Komet’s deep dive into the Kisah Bawah Tanah brand is a testament to its potential. We can’t wait to see where this partnership will take us, and we’re ready to revolutionize the landscape of Malaysian animation once again.”
