TV Asahi has launched a new cooking format, The GACHA GACHA Show, which was chosen as one of the five finalists at the ATF Formats Pitch competition.

It was the first-ever Japanese format nominated as a finalist for the competition. “GACHA GACHA” is the general name for the “capsule toy machine” in Japan, which has been very popular for many years. In this brand-new format, which was created by TV Asahi Production, three contestants compete by making meals. However, each ingredient is hidden in a capsule and drawn out of a gigantic GACHA GACHA machine by contestants.

Shuji Maeda, sales executive of format sales and development at TV Asahi, said: “The response from judges and audience was very positive, which made us believe that this format has universal appeal and potential to travel to many countries. Cooking formats are always in demand throughout the world, and this format has a very unique twist as GACHA GACHA machine brings excitement and surprise. We are looking for a partner with whom we can develop this format for the international market. Advanced discussions with several parties are ongoing, and hopefully we can announce some deals at MIPTV next April.”
