Montreal-based KOTV Productions has acquired the rights to remake the Emmy Award-winning State of the Union.

Based on Nick Hornby’s novel State of the Union: A Marriage in Ten Parts and the first adaptation by See Saw Films, the French-Canadian version l’Union Libre will star Louis Morissette and Marie-Claude Guérin. It is slated to debut on Radio-Canada’s SVOD platform verotv.ca in 2022.

Endeavor Content is handling global sales of the finished tape and format rights for the series.

A representative of See Saw Films said: “We are delighted to partner with KOTV. It feels like such a natural fit to have a French-Canadian adaptation, as we share the same type of humor and rhythm in dialogue.”

Dan Selig, senior VP of international TV distribution of the Americas for Endeavor Content, added: “State of the Union was an instant success worldwide. Marital relationships are popular, universal topics that audiences deeply relate to. We are confident that the adaptation will also resonate with the French-Canadian audience.”

Barbara Vallant of aroma-TV, who brokered the deal, stated: “We are delighted at the opportunity to adapt such a major work of art. State of the Union is simply so intelligent, witty, funny, and eccentric in the way it sheds light on contemporary relationships.”
