Armoza Formats Sends Pair of Shows to South Africa

Armoza Formats has struck a deal with South African production company The TVSMITHS for local adaptations of the prime-time entertainment format I Can Do That! and comedic factual-entertainment format The Gran Plan.

Developed and produced by Armoza Formats, I Can Do That! sees a group of celebrities try to replicate a performance and prove that they can do it. The act’s original performers will serve as the celebrities’ coaches for the week, and at week’s end, the celebrities will perform the act live for viewers who will then vote to determine who has given the best performance. The show has now been produced in over 25 countries and aired in over 90, including the U.S., Italy, Germany and Mexico.

Artza Productions’ The Gran Plan sees a trio of grandmas become life coaches for young people. In each episode, three grandmothers advise their young clients on everything from first dates to last dates, career struggles and unhealthy addictions.

Armoza has recently adapted two other formats in South Africa, docu-reality show Marry Me Now—which has versions in both Afrikaans and English—and the factual-entertainment format The Ex-Team, which is set to air soon on the VIA channel.

Anthony Wayment-Nel, COO and executive producer of The TVSMITHS, said: “TVSMITHS is elated to have secured the option for I Can Do That! and The Gran Plan for the South African market. South Africa is a celebrity-gaga nation so I Can Do That! is a terrific format to showcase our beloved stars in challenging performance acts and provide a big ratings hit opportunity. In South Africa, ‘Grannie’ is still the center of the family, so The Gran Plan is an absolute winning family-friendly format for a Mzansi TV Network. We believe that these shows are perfect for viewers across the country.”

Louise Melzack, Armoza Formats’ sales director for Africa, the U.K., Ireland, Nordics and Asia, added: “We are excited to partner with The TVSMITHS to bring local versions of I Can Do That! and The Gran Plan to South Africa. South Africa has become a key territory for us, with adaptations of some of our hit series already on their third season, and we look forward to continuing to bring our formats to South African viewers.”
