Netflix has ordered an adaptation of Jonas Bonnier’s novel The Helicopter Heist from creator Ronnie Sandahl and director Daniél Espinosa.

The series is based on a real 2009 event in which a helicopter landed on the roof of Sweden’s safest cash depot, and the police had to watch as robbers disappeared with several million dollars. It is a story of betrayal, vindication, fear and fatherhood.

The Helicopter Heist series will be Espinosa’s TV directorial debut. It is being produced by Johannes Åhlund for B-Reel Films. Executive producers are Ulf Synnerholm, Fredrik Heinig, Sandahl, Niclas Salomonsson and Jonas Bonnier.

“I want to tell an epic robbery tale, about great dreams and even greater risks,” Sandahl said. “A feverish, character-driven heist show about friendship, adrenaline, and hubris. I can’t imagine a more perfect director for the series than Daniel Espinosa, and I’m incredibly happy that he’s chosen to step aboard.”

“I have followed and been fascinated by this story ever since it happened,” Espinosa said. “When the opportunity presented itself to do it in a way that does it justice, with Ronnie and Netflix and the entire crew behind it, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.”
