Sony Delivers Q3 Profit Gains

TOKYO, January 31: Sony
Corporation published its third-quarter results today, delivering a 25-percent
increase in profit to 200.2 billion yen ($1.9 billion) on revenues that were
9.6 percent higher, reaching 2.85 trillion yen ($26.9 billion).

Electronics segment sales
increased 10.2 percent to $18.2 billion, led in part by Bravia LCD TVs;
operating income, however, fell 7 percent to $1.5 billion. In the Game segment,
revenues increased 31.2 percent to $5.1 billion, reversing last year’s loss to
deliver a profit of $113 million, thanks to PS3 sales.

Sony Pictures, however,
saw its revenues fall 24.6 percent, mostly as a result weaker film revenues in
both the theatrical and TV markets, to $2 billion, and operating income was
down 49.7 percent to $116 million.
