New C4 Commission Spotlights the Bible

LONDON: Channel 4 has commissioned a new seven-part series from Pioneer Productions on the story of the Bible that will map out the origins, ideas and influences of seven key sections of the scripture.

The Bible: A History, a follow-up series to Christianity: A History, will trace how these seven key sections came into existence and how they’ve shaped our world. Each part will be presented by a different commentator, writer or thinker, and as a whole, the series will contain a wide range of opinions and styles to express varying viewpoints on the Bible. The project was commissioned from Pioneer Productions and executive produced by Jeremy Dear.

Aaqil Ahmed, the commissioning editor for religion at Channel 4, said: “For the three Abrahamic faiths what is contained in the Bible is some of the most important scripture of all time. People of any or no faith world wide are affected by the history and impact of this book and for Channel 4 that makes it an important subject to cover and one that will resonate with our audience. Following on from the hugely successful Christianity: A History I am proud that we once again are committing to a major series that will help our audience understand the impact of religion on our world today.”

Dear commented: “The Bible is at the root of our culture, society and politics. Its influence in all spheres remains colossal and this series will explore its history and continuing role from a wide range of personal perspectives. It will tap into the enormous interest in this area that was explored in our last series. We’re delighted to once more be working with Channel 4 on this really exciting project.”
