STRATEGY FOR ROLLOUT: Legend of the Dragon
has been airing in Europe on a number of major broadcasters, including the BBC
in the U.K., Super RTL in Germany, Euro TV in France and TVE in Spain. In the
U.S., the TV show will air seven days a week on the Jetix block on Toon Disney
beginning in October.

Joy Tashjian Marketing Group
(JTMG), is handling the licensing and merchandising of Legend of the Dragon in the U.S. Joy Tashjian, the president of JTMG, feels
that the exposure the series will be getting on Jetix is critical to the
success of the merchandising that will be released shortly after the show’s
premiere.

“BKN has leveraged a very solid
commitment from Disney and Jetix [with a broadcast window of] seven days a
week,” says Tashjian. “The air times of this show are exceptional, too. It’s
going to run Monday through Friday during one of the half-hours between 7:00
a.m. to 8:00 a.m., and then Saturday and Sunday between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00
p.m. That’s very important when you’re talking about kids’ programming because
we’re finding that in launching a show, one day a week doesn’t make the
connection to kids. Seven days a week is great, but most broadcasters won’t
make that initial commitment, which is why this is an extraordinary deal.”

Legend of the Dragon has worldwide licensees including Grand Toys and The Game
Factory. Grand Toys is doing action figures of multiple sizes as well as play
environments. “We will have the 12-inch figure, the five-and-a-half inch figure
and the three-and-a-half inch figure,” she says. “They’re fully articulated and
they can all do martial arts movements. One of the play environments will be
the Golden Dragon’s temple comprised of individual temples for each of the 12
signs of the Ancient Chinese Zodiac. Each temple has its own human guardian is
who capable of transforming into a creature that reflects the skills and
likeness of the zodiac creature they represent. The action figures, play
environments and role-play toys create a lot of different product opportunities
for Legend of the Dragon. These will be
available for fall 2006 but most likely are really going to hit [the stores] in
early 2007, because we want the show to gain its momentum with the broadcaster
and we want it to have recognition with kids. So we would anticipate some
products in fall ‘06, but most buyers will be looking for early ’07.”

The Game Factory is doing
electronic games on PSP, PSP2, Game Boy, Xbox, and other platforms. “Those will
be available for shipment in November,” she says. “Genius Products is our home
entertainment licensee and their DVD will come out in November ’06 to support
the broadcast of the show on Jetix.”

Internationally, there are plans
for the products to be available in retail stores in the U.K., Spain and
Germany for this Christmas season.
