EBU Names New President

GENEVA, July 10: Fritz
Pleitgen, the director general of WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk), has been
elected as the new president of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Pleitgen succeeds Arne Wessberg (YLE), who held the role for
six years. The EBU also reelected Boris Bergant, deputy director general of
Radio-TV Slovenia, as VP. Also named as VPs were Richard Sambrook, the director
of the BBC’s global news division; Patrick de Carolis, director general of
France Télévisons; and John G. Bernander, broadcasting director of Norway’s
NRK.

The president and VPs are elected for a two-year period and
will begin their mandate in September 2006.
